What UK workers want for Christmas

Christmas can be a stressful time as people juggle a shortened working week as well as the extra social commitments that come with this time of year. But what do workers want from their employers at this time of year? Well, according to a survey by recruitment agency Reed, it’s NOT Mariah Carey!

The survey revealed some other seasonal bug-bears such as the office scrooge, the Christmas rush, as well as constant Christmas music and terrible Christmas jumpers! While this is a light-hearted take on the trials and tribulations of the Christmas, there are things employers can do to reward staff for their efforts throughout the year. Yet, 61% of respondents to a survey by Edenred said they received no Christmas reward at all in 2016.

What do workers want from a Christmas reward?

  • 58% of respondents said they want a non-cash reward

  • 72% believed that Christmas reward was performance-related

  • 61% said a Christmas reward makes them feel more appreciated

Employers shouldn’t forget that subsidising a Christmas party is a form of reward, although it may not always be obvious to employees.  What’s more a one-off reward at Christmas-time is no substitute for a well though-out employee benefits strategy that includes the workplace pension as well as protection benefits such as life cover, critical illness and health plans.
